Is Education the fruit of forbidden knowledge?
Education was the birthright of the wealthy, and to some extent, it still is. In the olden days, the royalty and nobility had the privilege to be educated it not just their mother tongue, but foreign languages as well. The religious heads needed to be educated as it was their duty to study the scriptures and translate the meaning of the “holy language” to the “language of the common”.
The reason why the commoners were kept illiterate was that the higher classes wanted to keep the sole right of power to them, and knowledge has always meant one of the strongest paths towards power. The scriptures were translated and crooked in a manner that would suit the religious authorities and the royalty. Taxes were made to be paid, rules were put on the common people, lives were sacrificed, only to satisfy the need of the higher classes which had the privilege to get education.
In England, in 1757, the first Sunday School was started by Robert Raikes, for boys who used to work in the factories all through the week. It was during the Victorian Age that common people, rather poor people, were considered among a part of the society which deserved education.
Education, as we see in many types of literature and social documentaries, was kept as a priced privilege of the rich and the higher class. In France, the French Revolution triggered a break from the strict social structure, which included the barriers between rich and the poor in regards to education as well. That education was thought to be the property of the rich is evident in the books of the Victorian Age.
Education, at present, is no doubt in a better condition as far as the class distinctions are concerned. There are many more scholarships available now and many more schools and vocational training centers.
Still, parents worry about their children if they choose some unconventional study path. The opportunities for those who want to study pottery or crafts or even photography and fashion designing in some parts of the world. Education is still, to some extent, a privilege strictly available to the rich. If not all kinds, then at least some strictly expensive ones.
